The Gilbert is named after the Gilbert Knitting Co. at the intersection of West Main and Furnace Streets. As early as 1831 there was a water-powered paper mill on this site. After a series of other mills came and went, the Gilbert company began with J.J. Gilbert as a principal owner in 1872. Read more about the History of the Inn.
